Opening Day Blues

Hearts 2 St Johnstone 0 in the opening Scottish Premier League match of this season should have come as no great surprise to Saints fans.

This is the start of Saints 15th Premier League campaign and only once have they won the opening fixture. That was away back in the inaugural Premier League season when a late John Muir goal at Muirton Park was enough to defeat Dundee United.

Subsequent seasons have seen Saints lose 8 and draw 5 matches.

Orderings off have also been a feature of these opening encounters. Rab Kilgour started the pattern in 1983 going for the early bath in a 1 – 0 defeat from Hearts. In 1991 John Inglis left early at Ibrox as Alex Totten’s team went down 6 – 0. Next Tommy Turner exited Stark’s Park in a 1 – 1 draw in 1993, then in 1998 at Motherwell, Paul Kane, departed early with Steven Anderson joining the illustrious club at Tynecastle in 2010. So Gregory Tade’s dismissal on Saturday is not unusual!

Good luck with the blog. Now bookmarked!

Will always remember Ando’s sending off for the Ref literally throwing the red card at him in 2010!
