Premier League Goal 550 coming up

When Rowan Vine fired in the winning goal against Celtic on Saturday it was Saints 549th Premier League goal.

Looking back through the records it was away back in 1975 during the first ever Premier League match on 30 August that John Muir scored Saints first goal. This at Muirton Park when his 86th minute strike gave Saints a 1 – 0 win over local rivals Dundee United. Earlier in the game Derek Robertson had saved a 6th minute penalty.

Saints team that day historic was: – Robertson, G.Smith, S.Smith, Ritchie, Macdonald, Kinnell, Muir [1], O’Rourke, Thomson, Cramond, Lambie. Subs, McGregor (NU) and MacLeod (NU).

It would be some years later before the 100th goal would come along. This was scored by Don McVicar when Saints went down 3 – 2 at East End Park to Dunfermline Athletic on 23 March 1991.

Team: – Hamilton, Treanor, Baltacha, Sweeney, Inglis, McGinnis, Moore [1], Curran, Macdonald, Grant, McVicar [1]. Subs Maskrey (9) and Heddle (5).

The 200th goal was 2 years later and again a late goal, again the 86th minute. On this occasion Ian Redford was our scorer in a 1 – 1 draw at Broomfield on 27 March 1993 against Airdrie.

Team : –  Rhodes, Byrne, Deas, McGowne, McGinnis, Redford [1], Moore, Davies, Wright, Dunne, Turner. Subs Kinnaird (5) and Curran (7).

On 14 November 1998 at McDiarmid Park, the 300th goal came when young Kieran McAnespie came off the bench and scored in the 78 minute against Celtic in a 2 – 1 win for Saints. Maybe there is an omen here in that Saints went on to finish 3rd in the Premier League that Season and qualified for Europe.

Team : – Main, McQuillan, Bollan, Dasovic, Dods, Kernaghan, Scott, O’Neil, Grant, O’Halloran, Simao [1]. Subs Ferguson (NU), Connolly (NU), McCluskey (NU), McAnespie (10) [1], Lowndes (9).

Number 400 goes to a great Saint, Jim Weir, when he scored in a 1 -1 draw at McDiarmid against Aberdeen on 25 August 2001.

Team : – Main, Murray, Forsyth, Dods, Weir [1], Kemble, Dasovic, Jackson, Falconer, Connolly, Kane. Subs Cuthbert (NU), McCluskey (5), McBride (10), Parker (11), MacDonald.

And so to 500. This was an Own Goal by Smith of Aberdeen at Pittodrie on 7 May 2011 in a match that saw Saints win 2 – 0.

Team : –  Enckelman, Mackay, Anderson, Adams [1], Duberry, Davidson, Millar, Moon, Craig, Jackson, MacDonald. Subs Smith (NU), Maybury (6), Durnan (NU), Invincibile (NU), Robertson (NU), Reynolds (10), May (11).

With Saints next match at Dingwall on Saturday, it would be nice if Saints could carry on their form from the Celtic match and bring Ross County’s long unbeaten run to an end. Oh! and of course the first goal would be the 550th Premier League goal.
