Winning Runs In The Top Flight

St Johnstone’s current run of 4 successive Premier League wins has aroused considerable interest in previous winning sequences both in the Premier League and the old First Division prior to League reconstruction in 1975.

On checking back through the results this is the only time during our Premier League campaigns that the team has achieved such a record. On 6 previous occasions ( below ) they have managed 3 straight wins but have been unable to extend that in the next game.

Dec 1983 ( Rennie ) St Mirren 2 – 1, Motherwell 3 – 1 , Dundee 1 – 0.
Dec 1990 ( Totten ) Hearts 2 – 1, Celtic 3 – 2, Hibs 1 – 0.
Nov 1992 ( Totten ) Dundee Utd 2 – 0, Airdrie 2 – 0, Motherwell 2 – 0.
Feb 1999 ( Clark ) Dundee Utd 1 – 0, Hearts 2 – 0, Dundee 1 – 0.
Apr 2011 ( McInnes ) Hibs 2 – 1, Aberdeen 2 – 0, Hamilton Accies 1 – 0.
Mar 2012 ( Lomas ) St Mirren 3 – 0, Hearts 2 – 1, Inverness CT 1 – 0.

Looking further back on only three other occasions has the team recorded 5 straight wins in the top flight.

The last time this was achieved was in 1970/71 when Willie Ormond’s great team went on to 3rd place and achieved qualification for the following season’s UEFA Cup. Results are below prior to a shock 1 – 0 defeat at Muirton to Cowdenbeath.

Feb 1971 Ayr United 3 – 1, Celtic 3 – 2, Falkirk 1 – 0, St Mirren, 1 – 0, Dundee 1 – 0.

The squad for these games was Donaldson, Lambie, Argue, Gordon, Rooney, Rennie, McPhee, Aird, Hall, McCarry, Pearson, Connolly, Aitken, Whitelaw and Coburn.

Prior to this, in March and April 1969, Ormond’s team had also chalked up 5 straight victories. These were:-

St Mirren 2 – 1, Airdrie 3 – 1, Hearts 2 – 1, Raith Rovers 5 – 1, Arbroath 2 – 1.

However, the very first team to achieve such a record was away back in 1934/35 when Tommy Muirhead’s team started the Season extremely well. The 5 wins ( below ) came in the middle of a fantastic run of form which saw 12 wins with only 1 defeat and 2 draws in the first 14 matches. This propelled Saints to the top of the First Division during September. The final table shows Saints in 5th place 9 points behind champions Rangers in a 20 team League.

Motherwell 2 – 1, Dundee 2 – 1, Ayr United 4 – 0, Albion Rovers 2 – 0,
Clyde 5 – 2.

Muirhead’s squad for these matches was : – Wylie, Welsh, Clark, Mason, Littlejohn, Campbell, A. Ferguson, H. Ferguson, Dickie, Davidson, Stewart, Tennant, Duncan.

So the challenge for Steve Lomas’ present squad is to defeat Kilmarnock on Saturday and Inverness away to write their names in Club history.
