6 September 1913

100 years ago today St Johnstone defeated Dunblane by 8 goals to Nil at the Recreation Grounds in a Scottish Cup Qualifying Cup 1st Round match.

The team that day was: – John Mulrooney, Willie Leishman, Archie Lindsay, Bert Neal, John Muir, Willie Williamson, Gordon Bannerman, David McWalter, Willie Heggie, Tommy Cairns, Henry Brown.

Goalscorers were: – Neal, Muir, Bannerman, McWalter, Heggie, Cairns ( 1 each ) and Brown 2.

Interestingly Tommy Cairns had been signed from Peebles Rovers in August 1913 and was sold to Rangers for £150 in November of that year.

During his time with Saints he played only 13 matches scoring 3 goals.

At Ibrox between 1913 and 1927 he won 7 League titles, 2 Scottish Cups and gained 8 Scotland caps.

He subsequently moved to Bradford City and in 1929, at the age of 38, helped them to win the League Division 3 North.

Following his retirement he became Arsenal’s Scottish scout and it is thought that he may have had an involvement in the transfer of Bobby Davidson from Saints to the Gunners in 1935.

Saints reportedly received what was a then record transfer fee in the region of £4,000 for Davidson’s signature.

This would equate to some £390,000 in today’s money.
