St Johnstone Hat Tricks in the Same Season

When Stevie May registered his second hat trick of the season against Hearts in the  3 – 3 draw at McDiarmid Park on Saturday many St Johnstone fans have asked about previous hat trick performances in the same Season.

For the record Stevie’s earlier treble also came at McDiarmid Park against Dundee United in Saints 3 – 0 win.

He is the first St Johnstone player to do this at the TOP level of Scottish football since Bob Cook in 1938/39 and before that Andy Main in 1928/29.

Whilst the likes of John Brogan, Jim Morton, Henry Hall, Roddy Grant and others have registered more than one hat trick theirs were not all in the same season.

Looking back through my records, George O’Boyle scored THREE hat tricks in 1994/95 Season.

3 Sept  A  Div 1  – Ayr United  4 – 3

27 Sep  A  B&Q Cup – Morton 3 – 4 aet

22 Apr  A  Div 1 – Stranraer 6 – 2

Before that Willie Watters did three hat tricks in 1987/88

21 Nov  H  Div 2  – East Stirling 3 – 1

19 Mar H  Div 2  –  Montrose  5 – 1

16 Apr  H  Div 2  – Montrose  4 – 0

In 1953/54 Ian Rodger also did the treble in one season.

17 Oct  A  Div B – Ayr United 4 – 3

31 Oct H  Div B  – Third Lanark 6 – 1

12 Dec  H  Div B  – Cowdenbeath 6 – 1

Paddy Buckley also hit three hat tricks in 1950/51 season.

19 Aug   H  LC  – Stenhousemuir 6 – 2

21 Oct  A  Div B  – Dunfermline Ath  7 – 2

17 Feb  A  Div B  – Queen’s Park  3 – 4.

In addition to the above Paddy Buckley scored two hat tricks in successive days!

The first came on 2 January 1950 when Saints demolished Dundee United at Muirton by 5 – 0.

The following day he did it again in a 5 – 2 victory over Stenhousemuir at Ochilview.

So whilst he is one treble behind the others there is no question that Stevie May is mixing in very good company.

Indeed, it could be argued that his achievements are in fact better than these previous heroes as he is doing it at the top level of Scottish football.

He has, of course, quite a number of matches ahead to write his name into the St Johnstone history books by scoring three hat tricks in the same season at the very highest level.
